This quenching device 1 includes a pipe conduit 3 closed at its one end 3a and opened at the other end, and a nozzle 4 inserted to the closed end section of the pipe conduit 3. The melt M is supplied to the closed end section, the steam S1 is injected to the melt from the nozzle 4 to move the melt M to an opening end section side by the steam flow generated by expanding the steam S1 while cooling the melt M, and the quenched material P is crushed by the expansion of the steam S1. This device includes a steam recovering device 8 for recovering the steam S2 used in cooling the melt M and crushing the quenched material P, and the steam S2 can be used in drying or/and preheating a material to obtain the melt M.
