To provide a device and a method for sampling a stratum, which are suitable for a length up to a great depth.
This stratum sampling device 10 penetrated into the ground for sampling sediment of a fixed length is composed of: a sampling box 20, the bottom surface and partial side surface of which are opened; a lid box 30 which can close the opened side surface of the sampling box 20; and two rods 41 and 42 which are arranged in the respective boxes 20 and 30 so as to be remotely operable. The lid box 30 is externally fitted to the sampling box 20 so as to close the opened side surface of the sampling box 20. The respective boxes 20 and 30 are made axially slidable by a guide means 32 which is provided in the bottom part of at least one of the respective boxes 20 and 30. Characteristically, upper parts of the boxes 20 and 30 are axially slid while being separated from each other in a surface direction, so as to be disengaged from each other and made separable from each other.
