PURPOSE: To obtain the compact device having large heat transfer area capable of promoting heat transfer in a modifying device consisting of a combustion chamber, reaction pipe, and piping, by using the reaction tube of triple tube-cylinder-type structure to be heated from the inner and outer faces.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction pipe 1 has a triple structure, the tips of the middle cylinder 16 are a little apart from parts where the inner cylinder 17 and the outer cylinder 15 are closed, a raw material and a modifying gas are made to flow back, and the exhaust pipe 8 is provided at the center of the inner tube 17. The pipe 1 is filled with the modifying catalyst 2, preheated air is fed from the pipes 6 and 7 to the casing 4, the fuel gas 11 is sent from the pipe 5 to the combustion catalyst layer 3, to start a combustion reaction. The raw material gas 12 consisting of methane and steam is sent from the pipe 9 and the preheating pipe 13 to the catalytic layer 2, converted into the modified gas 14 and recovered through the pipe 10. In the operation, the gas 12 finishes the modifying reaction at the cylinder 17, is returned, introduced to the cylinder 15, and modified within a temperature range necessary for a reaction equilibrium, so that modification ratio of methane is extremely improved.
