To read an image as fast as possible with a simple structure, in a device for reading an image including a sheet feeder.
This device for reading an image determines whether the volume of read image data of a document stored in a buffer exceeds a first threshold value. When the volume of the image data exceeds the first threshold value, the device stops the reading of the document, decelerates and stops transport of the document, identifies the sheet feed volume of the document in the deceleration period of the transport of the document and the sheet feed volume in an acceleration period of the transport of the document in restarting the reading of the document, and transports the document in a direction reverse to the transport direction in the reading until restarting the reading of the document in accordance with the total value of the identified sheet feed volumes. In addition, the device determines whether the volume of the image data stored in the buffer is set smaller than the second threshold value. When the volume of the image data is set smaller than the second threshold value, the device restarts the transport of the document, and restarts the reading of the document.
