PURPOSE: To provide a device for stopping a die in the attaching position for press machines with which a die is easily attached by surely stopping a slide in a set height position.

CONSTITUTION: By freely vertically moving the slide 11 with a driving device and cooperating an upper die 15 which is mounted on this slide 11 and a lower die 9 which is mounted on a bolster 7, the press work of a work is executed. At the time of attaching the die K to such a press machine 1, when it is detected that the slide 11 reaches a prescribed distance from the die K which is placed on the bolster 7 with a proximate sensor 25 mounted on the slide 11, the slide 11 is exactly stopped by a signal from this sensor 25 in the position where the die K is attached.
