PURPOSE: To provide a diagnostic contrast medium for nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) diagnosis which comprises a macromolecular polynuclear type metal complex, thus has higher contrasting performance than that of a mononuclear metal complex.
CONSTITUTION: An organic compound bearing 2-10 functional groups reactive with difunctional ligands such as amino, carboxyl or epoxy group is allowed to coordinate with a compound bearing at least one kind and 2 or more difunctional groups (such as diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) and remaining at least one hydroxyl after linking with these difunctional ligands and at least one kind and 2 or more metallic ions (Gd, Bi) to give this oligomeric metal complex of 1.000-10,000 molecular weight. This oligomeric metal complex is preferably dissolved in an aqueous solvent to prepare a diagnostic contrast medium in a solution form. The amount used is 0.0001-10-mmol/kg in NIVIR diagnosis, while 0.01-20mmol/kg in X-ray diagnosis.
