To avoid failure in laser welding in advance and to enhance welding efficiency by binarizing a luminance level through an image processor for the one frame screen of one cycle or more of weaving by a two dimensional image pickup device, cutting out a locus passed by a laser beam in one frame exposure, and thereby, diagnosing abnormality in an indicated value.
With a command given for starting a welding operation, a welding torch 13 is driven onto the ground glass 19 of the diagnostic device for a laser transmission system; diagnostic measurement is performed during the passing process of He-Ne laser on the ground glass 19; and the center point is detected by an image processor 23. If the diagnostic result of the image processing is OK, the torch is moved through a weld starting command to the welding position of a material 17 to be welded. With the welding torch 13 reaching the weld starting position, the shutter 3 is opened to start welding; upon completion of the welding, the torch returns to the initial state and the initial position L; and thus, this operation is repeated. If the diagnostic result is NO, the operation is stopped, with the alarm raised.
