NEW MATERIAL:A dibenzo[b,f]thiepin-5-oxide derivative of formula I (R1 is lower alkylene group; R2 and R3 are lower alkyl groups, etc.; X is halogen), and its salt.
EXAMPLE: 8-Chloro-10-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy)dibenzo[b,f]thiepin-5-oxide.
USE: A medicine having a delayed anesthetic action and an intermediate for the synthesis of a dibenzo[b,f]thiepin derivative (a psychotropic drug) of formula IV.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II is reacted with a compound of formula III (A) or its reactive derivative (B) at the hydroxyl group, e.g. an ester or salt of the compound of formula III with hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid to give a compound of formula I. An acidic condensing agent, e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid, is used for (A); a basic condensing agent, for (B).
