To provide a new dibenzopyrenone derivative produced by culturing lichen separated from Graphis scripta and useful as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, food additives, cosmetics, etc., such as ultraviolet-absorber, antioxidant and anthelmintic.

This compound is expressed by the formula (R is OH and R' is H, or R is H and R' is methyl) or its salt such as 10-oxo-1,8-dihydroxy-5- hydroxymethyl-3,7-dimethoxy-9-oxa-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene. The compound of the formula can be produced by culturing lichen separated from Graphis scripta in a medium composed mainly of malt extract and yeast extract (preferably having a sucrose concentration of 5-20%) at 15-20°C for 50-200 days, extracting the cultured product with an organic solvent and separating and purifying the extract by thin layer chromatography, etc.
