Abstract:
PURPOSE: A dichroic dye for liquid crystal suitable for a guest-host liquid crystal color display element, consisting of a special anthraquinone dye, having durability and improved dichroism, and capable of becoming a novel material assuming various colors.
CONSTITUTION: A dye consisting of an anthraquinone dye expressed by formula I [ is (substituted) phenyl; R1 is hydroxy or (substituted) amino; R2 and R3 are H, hydroxy, amino, nitro, cyano or halogen]. The compound can be obtained by condensing a dicarboxylic acid anhydride expressed by formula II with a compound expressed by the formula -NH2 in the presence or absence of an inert solvent, e.g. nitrobenzene or acetic acid, under heating.
