To improve performance of a heavy-duty diesel (HDD) engine equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) and to obtain an engine oil used therefor.
The engine is equipped with an EGR in which intake air and/or exhaust gas recirculation is cooled to a temperature below the dew point for at least 10% of the running time of the HDD engine and the engine is lubricated with a lubricating oil composition containing a large amount of an oil having a lubrication viscosity and a small amount of one or more kinds of polymers containing (i), (ii) and/or (iii) (wherein, (i) is a copolymer of a hydrogenated poly(monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon) and a poly(conjugated diene) in which the hydrogenated poly(monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon) segment constitutes 20%; (ii) is a specific olefin copolymer containing an alkyl-or arylamine or the like; and/or (iii) is an acrylate or alkyl acrylate copolymer derivative having a dispersing group).
