PURPOSE: To provide the subject new compound exhibiting a low elastic coefficient and a low anisotropy of refractive index and useful as an electro-optic liquid crystal display material, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [R1 is a 1 to 16C alkyl or alkoxyalkyl; Ring (A) is trans-2,2-difluoro-1,4-cyclohexylene or trans-3,3-difluoro-1,4- cyclohexylene; Ring B is 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene; X is F or H; R2 is F, Cl, cyano, a 1 to 16C alkyl, etc.], e.g. trans-2,2-difluoro-1-(4- propylphenyl)-4-propylcyclohexane. In addition, the compound of formula I is obtained, e.g. by synthesizing a compound of formula III from a compound of formula II as the raw material, isomerizing the resultant compound of formula III into its trans-form compound and subsequently reacting a fluorination agent such as diethylaminosulfur trifluoride therewith.
