In a reproducing-side minidisk recording and reproducing apparatus 1, a digital signal which is recorded on a magneto-optical disk 18 is reproduced, an error is corrected by a signal processing circuit 15, a residual error is corrected by an error correction circuit 31, and the digital signal is output to the input terminal 3' of a recording-side minidisk recording and reproducing apparatus 1' in a state that the signal is compressed. In the recording-side minidisk recording and reproducing apparatus 1', the compressed digital signal is not expanded so as to be recorded on a magneto-optical disk 18' as it is. In this manner, a dubbing is performed by using the digital signal in its compressed state by the minidisk recording and reproducing apparatus 1, As a result, the time and power consumption which are required for the dubbing can be reduced, and the efficiency of the dubbing can be enhanced.
