PURPOSE: To reduce the deterioration of picture quality even in the case of an uncorrectable code error by substituting the vertical reinforcing signal of a zero component for the uncorrectable code error generated from the upper and lower pictureless part areas of a letter box type EDTV signal screen.
CONSTITUTION: An external code ECC decoding part 15 prepares signals EFG1, EFG2 indicating code error areas for uncorrectable code errors. A code error correcting part 17 executes error correcting processing for substituting a zero component signal for an uncorrectable code error in the upper and lower pictureless part areas of the letter box type EDTV signal screen and substituting a picture signal having high correlation for the error in a picture area. A D/A conversion part 18 converts the processed signal into an analog signal to obtain a reproduced output signal V0. Consequently high quality pictures can be recorded/reproduced from any of TV signals NTSC, EDTV, and even when an uncorrectable code error is generated, the deterioration of picture quality can be reduced.
