To provide a dimming device in which visibility of side faces of transparent substrates, with a pair of transparent electrodes attached thereto, interposed in a gap between two transparent plates, is improved irrespective of the number of optical elements incorporated therein.
The dimming device 10 has a plurality of optical elements 3 provided in proximity in a row arrangement between the two transparent plates 1, 2, wherein mutually opposing transparent substrates 31, 32 with the pair of transparent electrodes 33, 34 attached thereto and a dimming layer 35 with which light transmission state is made variable by electrically controlling the transparent electrodes 33, 34 are arranged on the optical elements 3. A transparent solid layer 8 is filled into a space formed in a gap between the two transparent plates 1, 2. Side faces of the transparent substrates 31, 32 are tapered.
