PURPOSE: To provide a new diphenyl carbonate derivative useful as an intermediate easily convertible to an oxazolinedione derivative having high herbicidal activity.
CONSTITUTION: The diphenyl carbonate derivative of formula I [R is amino, cyanato or R1CONH (R1 is 1-8C substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or phenyl)], e.g. bis(2-chloro-4-fluoro-5--aminophenyl) carbonate. A compound of formula I wherein R is amino can be produced by reducing bis(2-chloro-4-fluoro-5- nitrophenyl) carbonate. A compound of formula I wherein R is cyanato is obtained by reacting the above compound with phosgene or a phosgene equivalent. The compound can be converted to another compound of formula I wherein R is R1CONH by reacting with an alcohol of formula II in the presence of a base. Reaction of a compound of formula I wherein R is amino with a chloroformic acid ester of formula III in the presence of a base gives a compound of formula I wherein R is R1OCONH.
