To perform stratified charge combustion operation excellent in fuel economy or exhaust emission , in a wide operation range.
A fuel injection valve is disposed at an approximately center position of an upper face of a combustion chamber, and an ignition plug is disposed adjacently to the fuel injection valve. An approximately cylindrical cavity is formed at a center position of the crown surface of a piston. Two stratified charge combustion modes are provided as follows: a first stratified charge operation mode (mode 1) igniting fuel during fuel injection or immediately after the completion of the fuel injection and before a collision with a piston; and a second stratified charge operation mode (mode 2) igniting the fuel after the completion of the fuel injection and has passed through the piston. In the first stratified charge mode, when a smoke emission amount or a CO emission amount exceeds a switching level, the first stratified mode is switched to the second stratified charge mode (mode 2). In the second stratified charge mode, when combustion stability exceeds a switching level, the second stratified charge mode is switched to the first stratified charge mode (mode 1).
