Abstract:

To positively form a stratified air-fuel mixture inside a combustion chamber.

The direct injection internal combustion engine is provided with: an outside cavity 3a on the crown face of a piston 3, having a substantially rotary body shape with its rotational axis substantially the same as the cylinder axis and having a side face and a bottom face; an inside cavity 3b on the bottom face of the outside cavity 3a with a substantially rotary body shape having a smaller rotational radius than the outside cavity 3a and its rotational axis substantially the same as the outside cavity 3a; and a fuel injection valve 11 for injecting fuel toward the piston 3 in a hollow conical form on the cylinder axis or near to it. During a predetermined engine operation state, a combustible mixed air-fuel layer is formed inside and over the outside cavity 3a to perform stratified charge combustion. The engine is equipped with a control means for determining an engine control amount regarding fuel injection so that all fuel spray obtained in one injection of the fuel injection valve 11 collides into the bottom face 15 of the outside cavity.
