PURPOSE: To suppress radiation noise from a direct injection type diesel engine over a wide range of operating conditions.

CONSTITUTION: A direct injection type diesel engine is provided with an auxiliary injection nozzle 17 to sub-inject fuel into a fuel chamber, a main injection nozzle 19 to main-inject fuel into the combustion chamber at a higher injection ratio than auxiliary injection, and a fuel injection pump 20 which judges an operating area in which radiation noise from an engine 21 may occur and in which auxiliary injection is preceded by main injection in the operating, area where radiation noise may occur.
