A bottom surface IC of a cylinder head 1 that forms a combustion chamber 6 of a direct injection type internal combustion engine is made flat. An intake valve 4 and an exhaust valve 5, which operate in a direction perpendicular to this flat surface, are provided. The center of a cavity 12 formed in a piston 3 is made offset a predetermined distance from a reference line that connects each center of the intake valve 4 and exhaust valve 5. An intake port 29 is extended from the intake valve 4 in the same direction as the center of the cavity 12 with respect to the reference line. An exhaust port 33 is extended from the exhaust valve 5 in a direction opposite to the intake port 29. Further, a fuel injection valve 14 that injects fuel toward near the center of the cavity 12 is mounted to the cylinder head 1, being offset in the same direction as the center of the cavity 12 with respect to the reference line.
