Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To establish enhancement of the fuel economy and the enhancement of the output compatibly by of a direct injection type internal combustion engine by setting the shape of the combustion chamber and the relative positional relationship of constituent parts of the combustion chamber so that the combustion efficiency becomes the highest.
SOLUTION: An direct injection type internal combustion engine to inject the fuel directly into a combustion chamber 3 is structured so that the undersurface of a cylinder head 8 is made in a pentroof shape, the top face of each piston 2 is made in a crest shape alongside the pentroof shape, and that a recess 25 is formed at least in the inclined oversurface on the intake valve side of the top face of the piston 2, wherein the ratio of Va and Vb to the total capacity of the combustion chamber 3 Va+Vb+Vb when the piston 2 lies at the upper dead point should be between 0.4 and 0.6, where Va represents the capacity portion inside the recess 25 and Vb represents the capacity portion between the cylinder head 8 undersurface and the piston 2 oversurface located over the recess 25 among the capacity of the combustion chamber 3 when the piston 2 lies at the upper dead point.
