To provide a discharge lamp lighting device in which a rush current can be prevented without complicating a circuit constitution.
After starting a discharge lamp lighting device 11, on-duty of a first and a second switching device Q1, Q2 is set at 100% and 0% respectively, and as a frequency number is in a constant condition, on-duty of the first and the second switching devices Q1, Q2 is gradually decreased and increased respectively, so flow of a rush current is prevented. As fluorescent lamps FL1, FL2 gets to preheated conditions, a voltage is applied to the fluorescent lamps FL1, FL2 in the condition where on-duty of the first and the second switching device Q1, Q2 is roughly kept constant. As preheating of the fluorescent lamps FL1, FL2 are completed to start them, on-duty of the first and the second switching device Q1, W2 is quickly decreased respectively, while a high voltage is applied to the fluorescent lamps FL1, FL2 to start them.
