To provide a discharge lamp capable of suitably sealing with the usage of a functional gradient material, having a simple structure of an electrode, and capable of easily assembling.
This discharge lamp is provided with a bulb 1 having a main part made of a non-conductive material and having an aperture 1a; and a closing body 2 constituted by the functional gradient material wherein a tip area 2a is an electrode area substantially constituted by tungsten, a base end area 2c is a non-conductive material rich area separated from the electrode area, and an intermediate area 2b is a gradient material area having mixing ratio of a conductive material and the non-conductive material gradually varying and positioned on an intermediate part between the electrode area and the non- conductive material rich area, and these areas are integrally formed to provide the functionally gradient material, and closing the aperture 1a of the bulb 1 at least in the non-conductive material rich area so that the electrode area confronts an inside of the bulb 1.
