Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discontinuous carbon fiber base material for obtaining a molding excellent in mechanical properties, high in bulk density and excellent in storage efficiency when being wound around a roll.SOLUTION: Provided is a discontinuous carbon fiber base material 10 obtained by dispersing a chopped carbon fiber 9 at random, in which the carbon fiber 9 included in the discontinuous carbon fiber base material 10 is a sizing agent-coated carbon fiber including an epoxy compound as the main component, the sizing agent includes a hardening agent having a nitrogen or phosphorous content of 1.3 mass% or lower, and also, the hydroxyl value (a)meq./g of the sizing agent obtained by eluting the sizing agent-coated carbon fiber into an N,N-dimethylformamide solvent and performing ultrasonic treatment and an epoxy value (b)meq./g satisfy the following (I) to (III):(I)8≤(a)+(b)≤16,(II)(a)/(b)≥7 and (III)(b)≥0.1.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
