PURPOSE: To provide a coal-water slurry having a fluidity even at high coal concentrations, by employing a dispersant comprising a water-soluble copolymer obtd. from starting monomers composed of two particular monomers as essential components.
CONSTITUTION: The title dispersant comprises a water-soluble copolymer obtd. from starting monomers composed of the following monomers (I) and (II) as essential components, wherein the molar ratio of monomer (I) to monomer (II) is 1:2W1:500 and wherein the total of these monomers is not smaller than 50mol% of the whole monomers. Monomer (I) is an unsatd. monomer of formula I [wherein R1WR3 are each H or a methyl group; A1 is -CH2-, a group of the formula II, a group of the formula III, or -C(CH3)2-, a group of the formula II, a group of the formula III, or -C(CH3)2-; A2 is a 2W4C alkylene group; n is 0 or 1W100 on the average; and R4 is H, a 1W30C alkyl or alkenyl group]. Monomer (II) is sulfoalkyl (meth)acrylate monomer of formula IV [wherein R5 is H or a methyl group; Z is a 1W4C alkylene group; and M is H, an alkali metal, or the like]. Monomers (I) and (II) may be employed alone or in any combination thereof.
