An electronic document management system or the like for managing electronic documents associated with predetermined management information has a display area divided into a grid shape and capable of containing a plurality of icons or thumbnails representing a single or a plurality of documents. Groups of areas displaying the classification range of management information associated with a document or folder or database specifying each of those grid areas are provided in two positions serving as the indexes of the grid-shaped display area. The management information can be designated by a user. The value of the classification range can be varied by the user. The icons or thumbnails contained within the grid-shaped area are rearranged according to the value of the classification range designated.
