Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a display in a reflection display mode and a display in a transmission mode from occurring negative/positiveinversion by arranging a reflecting polarizer under a liquid crystal panel.
SOLUTION: Under an STN liquid crystal panel 20, a reflecting polarizer 40 as a 1st polarized light separation means, a diffuser 30 as an optical diffusion means, an illuminator 70 as an illumination means, and a reflecting plate 90 as a light reflection means are arranged in this order. Under external light in a part with voltage impression, the light reflected by the reflection polarizer 40 exits in a form of plane polarized light like a mirror-finished surface, and in a part without voltage impression, the light which has transmitted the reflecting polarizer 40 is diffused by the diffuser 30, and exits in a white form of plane polarized light. Therefore, a mirror-like display to the white ground, namely, a dark display is obtained. Under lighting of a light source, in the part with voltage impression, the light is absorbed by a polarizing plate 12 to become black, and in the part without voltage impression, the light exits from the polarizing plate 12. Therefore, a black display is obtained for a background color to the exit light color from an illuminator.
