To provide a display device and a display method for reducing a harmful effect on convenience of a user and reducing power consumption as much as possible.
A display part 106 displays a text, a picture, or the both. An illuminating part 104 emits light to illuminate the display part 106. An illumination control part 103 stops the light emitted from the illuminating part 104, when a state of the device not to be inputted to an electronic instrument from the user is continued for a predetermined time. A display control part 105 lowers the gradation number of the display part 106 by control from the illumination control part 103 corresponding to the light emitted from the illuminating part 104 being stopped. When the electronic instrument is inputted from the user, in a state of the device where the light of the illuminating part 104 is stopped and the gradation of the display part 106 is lowered, the illumination control part 103 turns the illuminating part 104 on. Moreover, the display control part 105 returns the gradation of the display part 106 to an ordinary state.
