The display device for a vehicle performs display by a pointer of a display part 2 by reading a detected vehicle speed VP, stepwise changes the display position (displayed vehicle speed VPS) of the pointer corresponding to the vehicle speed VP by repeating the drive and stop of the pointer, and sets the stopping time TSTP of the pointer to a second predetermined time period T2 when the illuminance LM outside the vehicle is decreased to stop the pointer for a longer time than a first predetermined time period T1 to be applied when the illuminance is higher.
