When gamma adjustments of a display device are made, a reference image 11 comprising pixels of 0% in luminance and pixels of 100% in luminance and a comparison image 12 adjacent to the reference image 11 and comprising pixels of 50% in luminance are displayed simultaneously. The reference image 11 always has the same luminance without depending on gamma characteristics, and the comparison image 12 varies according to 50% luminance of the gamma characteristics. The reference image 11 is recognized as gray of 50% in luminance when viewed at a sufficient long distance, so when the reference image 11 and comparison image 12 are different in luminance, the gamma characteristics are only adjusted so that the reference image 11 and comparison image 12 have the same luminance. Namely, the gamma characteristics are adjusted such that the border between the reference image 11 and comparison image 12 is too unclear to clearly recognize.
