PURPOSE: To provide a display element for a large-sized display screen in which the difference between surface luminance in the direction of the front face and the one in an oblique direction is small and by which an excellent-quality video with almost no irregularity can be displayed.

CONSTITUTION: Three discharge tubes 2 for red, green and blue are attached along the upper wall surface of a lamp case 1 having a shape whose aperture part 9 side is large by using a lamp holders 3 and 4. A light diffusion board 5 for transmitting and diffusing light emitting from the tube 2 is attached to the part 9, and a color correcting color filter 6 for correcting the respective colors of red, green and blue is attached over the board 5. A connector 7 for connecting this element to a substrate, etc., having a circuit for driving the display element is provided on the rear part of the display element.
