To provide a practical display unit which can comparatively easily deal with the increase in the size and the thickness reduction of a panel is a direct viewing type enabling a high contrast, displayed colors of which hardly fade even under external light, and makes use of the functional characteristics of a display element providing wide viewing angles.
The display unit has a plurality of display units. Each display unit consists of a light transmission plate to which a light beam is introduced, and a display element which is provided oppositely to one surface of the light transmission plate and includes a drive part arrayed with the actuator parts of the number corresponding to a large number of pixels, and displays an image according to an image signal on the light transmission plate by controlling the displacement operation of the contact/distancing direction of the actuator parts to the light transmission plate according to the attribute of the inputted image signal, and controlling light leakage in the prescribed region of the light transmission plate. The display units are connected and arranged so as to form a prescribed angle with each other.
