Abstract:

To provide a distal targeting system including a magnetic field generator for finding the position of a bore in an orthopedic appliance such as an intramedullary nail.

The distal targeting system for determining the position and the direction of the appliance to a target includes a movable guide assembly for guiding the appliance to the target, a plurality of magnetic field generators generating known and discriminable magnetic fields in response to a drive signal and provided in the movable guide assembly, a plurality of sensors generating sensor signals in response to the magnetic fields and disposed in known positions to the target, a signal processor generating three position coordinates of a point on the movable guide assembly and two azimuthal coordinates of their axes in response to the drive signal and the sensor signals, and a display displaying the position of the point relative to the target and an alignment between the axis of the movable guide assembly and the axis of the target in response to the signal processor.
