Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely measure the occupant position from an instrument panel by interpolating the measurement value measured every fixed period of the occupant position from the instrument panel with the displacement quantity by twice integration of acceleration.
SOLUTION: An ultrasonic sensor 17 is provided on an instrument panel similarly to an infrared sensor 16 to detect a signal necessary for calculating the distance to a person sitting in the front-passenger seat. In an integrating circuit 18, the acceleration signal from an acceleration sensor 10 is integrated twice to calculate the displacement quantity of the head of the occupant when the acceleration acts on the head of the occupant. In an occupant position calculating circuit 19, it is judged whether the occupant is sitting in the front- passenger seat or not on the basis of the output from the infrared sensor 16, and the distance is detected from the ultrasonic sensor 17. Every time the distance signal from the ultrasonic sensor 17 is provided, the displacement supplied from the integrating circuit 18 is subtracted by use of this as the initial value to calculate the distance of the head of the occupant from the instrument panel.
