To improve the yield of a pure product from crude anthracene by conducting a distillation in two stages.
A distillation of crude anthracene is conducted in two stages; in the 1st stage, a fraction of 280-320°C in boiling point at atmospheric pressure is separated as an overhead (pref. anthracene-free diphenylene oxide/fluorene fraction), while the bottom product is fed to a carbozole-contg. residual product. In the 2nd stage (column), the resultant mixture is separated into anthracene fraction and carbazole fraction. It is preferable that part of the bottom product in the 2nd distillation column be drawn and then fed to this column again, a phenanthrene-contg. overhead fraction is removed, and the distillation is conducted using a plate column.
