PURPOSE: To update information to be provided by a server from the client side without being conscious of the distribution of servers regarding a distributed information providing system with which information is received by finding out the server, where required information exists, by performing inquiry from a client to the plural distributedly arranged servers for providing information.

CONSTITUTION: A client 1 is provided with an information possessing means 11 for requesting information to servers 2 while designating the instruction of reference or update, the position of information and the attribute of information, etc., means 12 for storing the information received from any server 2, information updating means 14 for updating the received information, and means for transmitting the information of the updated result to the server 2 together with the instruction of the position and update. The server 2 is provided with a means for identifying the instruction from the client 1 and transmitting the information of the designated position responding to the instruction of information reference and an updated result storage means 23 for storing the updated result transmitted together with the updating instruction in a file 24.
