The divided chamber type internal combustion engine 1 is provided with a main-combustion chamber 63, a divided combustion chamber 61 and ECU 40. The divided combustion chamber 61 is provided with adjoining the main-chamber 63. The ECU 40 controls a divided combustion chamber equivalence ratio to a richer or leaner ratio than a temperature maximum equivalence ratio if an overall equivalence ratio is controlled to a richer ratio than a theoretical equivalence ratio or the theoretical equivalence ratio. The overall equivalence ratio is an average equivalence ratio of whole of the main-combustion chamber 63 and the divided combustion chamber 61. The divided combustion chamber ratio is an equivalence ratio of the divided combustion chamber 61. The temperature maximum equivalence ratio is an equivalence ratio with which combustion temperature gets the maximum.
