PURPOSE: To construct a document preparation/edition device capable of easily executing range specifying operation in editing operation and improved at its operability by providing the device with a function part for judging whether a curve to be a locus indicating the movement of a pen point includes a closed curve or not.

CONSTITUTION: An area specification method judging device 6 for judging whether a curve to be a locus indicating the movement of a pen point 3 includes a closed curve or not during the period of turning a pen point switch from ON to OFF after turning on it at the time of specifying the range of editing operation characteristically sets up continued characters from the character on which the pen point switch is turned from OFF to ON up to the character on which the switch is turned off as a range specifying area when the closed curve is not included, or when the closed area is included, sets up the set of characters surrounded by the closed curve as the range specifying area or setting up the inside of a rectangular area defined by the leftmost point of the moving locus of the pen point 3 as the left side, the uppermost point as the upper side, the rightmost point as the right side, and the lowermost point as the lower side as the range specifying area.
