PURPOSE: To reliably check the discharge of a document whichever discharge path the document is moved by disposing document detecting means near a diverging point of the discharge path.

CONSTITUTION: When a document fed from an inlet tray 50 is detected by a DF document sensor 29, a pressing roller is moved downward, so that the document is passed through a transport roller 21 and fed between an overall belt 23 and a document platen glass 37 by rotation of the roller. When the leading end of the document is detected by an inlet sensor 30, a clock signal is counted, and when it amounts to a fixed value, the document is stopped to be copied. After the completion of copying operation, the document is again transported and discharged through discharge rollers 25, 27 to a discharge tray 28 or through the discharge roller 25 directly to a discharge tray portion of an opened opening and closing cover 28. The discharged document can be reliably checked by a paper discharge sensor 31 just before the discharge roller 25 even if the document is moved in any direction.
