PURPOSE: To minimize the spacing between a double azimuth head and a tape in a head gap and, at the same time, to obtain the optimum head touch performance which does not change the output characteristic of the head even when wear deformation occurs in the head as a result of long-time running.
CONSTITUTION: The gap 4-5 interval I2 between two heads of a double azimuth head 1, distances from the end faces of the cores on the facing sides to the head gaps, and radius of the cross section in the direction perpendicular to the sliding direction of the head on the tape are respectively set at 100-300μm, 200±50μm, and ≥3mm and the front end of the head is protruded from the surface of a rotary drum by ≥40μm. Since the spacing in the head gap is stabilized at a small value, a stable head output can be secured. Even when the tip of the head is deformed by wear as a result of long-time running, the head output is stabilized.
