PURPOSE: To readily open the lid of e.g. the arm rest of an automobile from both right and left sides by providing the lid with freely sliding shafts on both the right and left sides and knobs on both the right and left sides.

CONSTITUTION: While a lid 21 is fitted to an opening 12 and two pairs of shafts 30, 40 are fitted into the respective bearing holes 13, 14 of the opening 12, the opening 12 is kept closed by the lid 21 by means of the force of a pressing member which presses the shafts 30, 40 so that the ends of the shafts are fitted into the holes. One control knob 50 or 60 which corresponds to the shafts 30 or 40 opposite to that side of the lid 21 which is to be opened is pushed against the pressing force of the pressing member and slid inwards; then the pair of shafts 30 or 40 located on that side is pressed at its end 31 via the abutting face 52 of the control knob 50 or 60 and has its end drawn into the lid 21 and so the lid 21 can be opened in a desired direction with the remaining pair of shafts 40 or 50 serving as an axis of rotation.
