To provide an apparatus for drying sludge or the like, in which the object to be dried can be dried well while saving fuel expenses even when the object to be dried has high viscosity or contains a large quantity of solids (such as sludge, fowl droppings and waste food, for example).
The apparatus for drying sludge or the like is constituted as follows. Cylinders 6 each having a screw conveyer 12 incorporated therein are arranged inside a drying chamber 2 such that they are arranged in a plurality of stages in the vertical direction and extended in the transverse direction. One end of the cylinder 6 is communicated with the end of the upper or lower cylinder 6 to form one cylinder. Screw conveyers 12 are arranged so that the outward and homeward paths of the adjacent ones are alternately arranged in the vertical direction. A throw-in port to be communicated with the outside of the drying chamber 2 is arranged on the one end of the cylinder 6 and a discharge port to be communicated with the outside of the drying chamber 2 is arranged on the other end of the cylinder 6. An electric heater 26 is arranged inside the screw shaft 12a of the screw conveyer 12.
