PURPOSE: To reduce considerably the number of constituting elements to make the circuit constitution simpler by providing a signal electrode driving circuit with switching elements and gate elements and using one stage of frame memories.
CONSTITUTION: The signal electrode driving circuit consists of a pair of frame memories capable of parallel-serial conversion, a driving voltage generating circuit 1, and a pulse train generating circuit 12 which generates a pulse train for gradation. In the data write cycle, an S/P converting signal 103 is kept high to inhibit parallel-serial conversion of frame memories until the write of display data is terminated. No voltage is applied to a liquid crystal practically by gate elements AND1WAND4 and switching elements SW1WSW8. When the signal 103 goes to the low level and the memory data read cycle is started, frame memories execute parallel-serial conversion in accordance with a shift pulse 102 for gradation, and data stored in parallel are converted to serial data and are outputted. Simultaneously, an output voltage is applied to the liquid crystal in accordance with an AC inverting signal 10.
