The driving method for a display panel (2) which performs gray scale display by constituting each of fields constituting video signals of a plurality of subfields is disclosed. In the driving method, a luminance distribution of the video signal is detected, each field is dividing into a first subfield group consisting of N pieces (N is an integer of 1 or more) of the subfields and a second subfield group consisting of M pieces (M is an integer of 1 or more) of the subfields, and the first subfield group in M+1 gray scales and the second subfield group in N+1 gray scales are respectively displayed on the display panel (2). The number of the subfields N and M to be respectively allocated to the first and second subfield groups are set according to the luminance distribution.
