Abstract:
PURPOSE:To allow driving even a side-chain type ferroelectric high-polymer liquid crystal panel by C voltage superposition and to obtain good display quality by driving the ferroelectric liquid crystal panel consisting of the side-chain type ferroelectric high-polymer liquid crystal or the compsn. thereof by the driving signal superposed with a specific AC voltage. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal cell constituted by inserting the ferroelectric liquid crystal 100a between glass substrates 100c provided with transparent electrodes 100b consisting of ITO is driven by impressing the driving signal superposed with 100 to 1,000KHz to the liquid crystal panel. For example, the side-chain type ferroelectric high-polymer liquid crystal of a polyacrylate system is used for the side-chain type ferroelectric high-polymer liquid crystal of the liquid crystal panel. The contribution of the liquid crystal to a dielectric constant is mostly by the side chain part and the contribution by the main chain part is substantially negligible. The bistable memory characteristic of the side chain or mixed low-molecular liquid crystal molecules is stabilized in such a manner without disturbing the arrangement state of the high-polymer main chain and the good display is obtd.
