To reduce overall length in the axial direction and weight by arranging a retarder on a driving unit of an automobile in a space partitioned by a front surface of a crank housing facing the retarder, a shaft of an air blower extending in parallel against an engine shaft and a rear side end part of a ring of the air blower.
A driving unit for an automobile is constituted by arranging a retarder 2 having a rotor impeller 2.1 and a stator impeller 2.2 and an air blower 3 on the left side of a crank housing 1.3. A housing of the retarder 2 is constituted of a bell type part 2.3 to surround the rotor impeller 2.1 and a covering member 2.4. Additionally, this retarder 2 is arranged in a space limited by an end surface of the crank housing 1.3 facing the retarder, a transmission gear set to drive the air blower 3, an air blower shaft 3.2 and a rear side edge of the air blower ring 3.1. That is, the retarder 2 is arranged in a flight circle, the space is efficiently used and overall length of the device is reduced.
