Compsn. with pharmaceutical and/or antimicrobial activity contain glucaric acid (I) and/or >=1 of its physiologically tolerable derivs. Suitable derivs. of (I) are salts, esters and amides, and glucarolactone. The compsns. can contain 0.01-20 (pref. 0.5-10, esp. 1-5)wt. % of (I) and/or its derivs. The compsns. can be used e.g., as antimicrobial (antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal) medicaments, industrial microbicides, food preservatives, agricultural fungicides and disinfectants.
