A drum washing machine includes: a water tub 42 for rotatably supporting the shaft of a rotary drum 43; a washing water and detergent supply device 61 and water supply means 54 for supplying a detergent and washing water; water level detection means 76 for detecting a water level of washing water in the water tub; a water circulation system 56 for jetting washing water in the water tub 42 from the inside front side of the water tub 42 into the rotary drum 43 by a circulation pump 67; a water tank deflation hose 77 which connects pipes between the upper part of the water tub 42 and the washing water and detergent supply device 61; and control means 82 for controlling each of the processes including water supplying, washing, rinsing, and dewatering. The control means 82 is configured to determine an abnormal foam generation when an amount of change in a water level signal obtained the water level detection means 76 becomes a prescribed threshold value or greater during steps of supplying and agitating water in a washing process, and to control the following processes as defoaming processes. This machine can detect an abnormal foam generation with a constitution in which an influence of a water level variation or an amount of clothing is eliminated, and then prevent an occurrence of damage due to an excessive generation of foam.
