PURPOSE: To continuously and easily produce a cationized starch useful as an additive for paper or the like by executing a reaction in the presence of a specified mixture when reacting a starch and an alkylene epoxide in an alkaline medium in the presence of water.
CONSTITUTION: When executing the dry cationization of starch by reacting a starch and an alkylene epoxide in an alkaline medium in the presence of water, this cationization is executed in the presence of a mixture hydroxide or oxide of a finely particulate hydrophilic silicic acid and an alkali silicate and/or an alkali aluminate or an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal with an alkali carbonate or a mixture of at least one of these hydroxides, oxides and carbonates with an alkali silicate and/or an alkali aluminate.
