PURPOSE: To minimize the spread of dust, by using as a gas exhaust port an upper part of a cooling zone capable of having a large area to lower a gas flow rate and disposing a spare chamber for charge coke along an upper, external periphery of a cooling chamber.

CONSTITUTION: A bucket 2 full of red hot coke is carried by means of a crane 23 disposed on a frame 24 to a hopper 3. The coke is fed through a chute 4 into a cooling chamber 1a of a cooling water 1. On the other hand, the inert gas for cooling led through a circulating blower 9 to a lower part of the tower 1 by means of a header 10 is fed to the chamber 1a thereby cooling the coke. Then, the gas is led into a gas exhaust port 11 of a boiler outside wall 26. The heat of the gas is recovered by a boiler tube 12, and the gas is recycled through a fine powder dust catcher 13 to the blower 9.
